With two of America’s most storied football teams going head to head this weekend, I thought it was only fitting to throwback with this vintage-esque football tailgate from the talented gals at Fresh Chick Design Studio.  This was thrown around college football kick-off time this past season, during which they decided to put together a tailgate-inspired party for the home (cornbread muffins “iced” with honey butter? Oh my!) I just love the houndstooth/stripe combo in the paper products and the red and brown could not be more appropriate for the theme. Get ready to “set the play in motion” with this beautifully designed scheme…

Details, as told by Shannon & Rebecca:

{INSPIRATION} A great way to start would be to pick a color from one of your favorite teams or simply make up a color scheme that you like!  We chose licorice red and chocolate brown which seemed appropriate with the welcoming of fall and the fun filled football season.  You don’t have to go overboard with team paraphernalia to throw great themed party.  We focused more on the tailgate theme with our printable party collection and played up the menu and sweets around a casual football element.

{DECOR & MENU} Natural burlap fabric paired with a traditional gingham fabric was used to dress the tables.  We had some great finds at a local Goodwill where we “scored” 2 spring form cake pans and a candlestick that were easily transformed into a two-tiered party tray DIY project.  A great alternative to its pricier counterparts seen at a local retailer.  This was used to hold peanuts and cornbread muffins iced with honey-butter to resemble cupcakes.  Other items on the menu included chili with all of the the toppings, hot wings, and beer cheese with crackers. For the sweets lover, we served up some super easy dessert recipes along with familiar finds such as Turtle Chex Mix and Twizzlers. To wash it all down?  Nothing fancy here….ice cold brewsky and classic rootbeer beverages were the final touches to complete this fourth and down.

They were also nice enough to include two recipes for us, too which look like pure deliciousness!

{Touchdown Toffee}
***********************
1 sleeve saltine crackers
1 stick of butter
1 cup packed light brown sugar
2 cups milk chocolate chips
3/4 cup chopped pecans

Preheat oven to 400 degrees.   Line your cookie sheet with foil and spray with cooking spray,  lay out saltine crackers in single layer making sure edges touch.

In a small saucepan combine the brown sugar and the butter. Bring both to a boil and boil for 3 minutes. Immediately pour over saltines and spread to cover the crackers.

Bake at 400 degrees for 5 minutes or until bubbly.  Remove from the oven and let sit for 1 minute, then sprinkle chocolate chips over the top. Let sit for 5 minutes. Spread melted chocolate and then top with chopped nuts. Cool in the fridge for 30 minutes.  Once cooled, break into pieces.

{Oreo Truffles}
*****************
1 pkg (8 oz.) Softened Cream Cheese
36 OREO Cookies, finely crushed
1 pkg milk chocolate candy melts

Mix cream cheese and cookie crumbs until well blended.  Roll into balls and shape into footballs.  Refrigerate for 30 minutes.  Then, dip in melted chocolate; place on waxed paper.  Once chocolate sets, decorate with white chocolate for football details.  Refrigerate until firm and serve.
